A History of Britain

A History of Britain is a fifteen-episode series that charts the history of the British Isles. Each episode runs for approximately an hour and focuses on a different period of British history. Threaded throughout the series is a central question about the nation’s future, explored through an examination of its past.

Historian Simon Schama, the principal presenter and historian of the series, guides viewers through Britain’s history by visiting key historical sites and recounting the stories that link modern Britain to its deep past. Historical re-enactments are used throughout to help illustrate key events and figures.

The documentary also makes extensive use of a soundtrack designed to reflect the music characteristic of various historical periods. The score was composed and arranged by John Harle, with selections enhanced by vocal performances from artists such as Emma Kirkby and Lucie Skeaping.
