LA Stories

LA Stories takes viewers on a journey through the diverse and complex landscape of Los Angeles, California. This three-part series follows British journalist Louis Theroux as he immerses himself in various subcultures and communities within the City of Angels.

In the first episode, titled “City of Dogs,” Theroux focuses on the relationship between Angelenos and their canine companions. He visits neighborhoods where stray dogs roam freely and meets with local animal rescue organizations working tirelessly to address the city’s overwhelming pet population. Theroux also spends time with devoted pet owners who go to extraordinary lengths for their furry friends, including those who seek alternative therapies and luxury services for their dogs.

The second episode, “Edge of Life,” brings viewers into the world of end-of-life care in Los Angeles. Theroux visits hospitals and hospices, speaking with terminally ill patients, their families, and healthcare professionals. This episode sheds light on the difficult decisions and emotional challenges faced by those dealing with life-threatening illnesses, as well as the ethical dilemmas surrounding end-of-life care in the United States.

The final episode, “Among the Sex Offenders,” tackles the controversial topic of convicted sex offenders living in Los Angeles. Theroux meets with individuals who have served their sentences and are now trying to reintegrate into society, often facing significant challenges and stigma. He also speaks with law enforcement officials, therapists, and community members to gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues surrounding sex offender rehabilitation and public safety.

Throughout LA Stories, the Theroux employs his signature interview style, combining empathy, curiosity, and a touch of dry humor to engage with his subjects. His approach allows for candid conversations that reveal the humanity behind often misunderstood or marginalized groups within Los Angeles.

The series paints a multifaceted portrait of Los Angeles, moving beyond the glitz and glamour typically associated with the city. It showcases the diverse experiences of its residents, from the affluent to the struggling, and highlights the social issues that affect the metropolis.
