Russell Brand: From Addiction To Recovery
Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery follows the English comedian and actor as he reflects on his own battle with heroin addiction, a period during which his career was on the brink of collapse and he was warned that he had six months to live if he continued using drugs. Sober since 2003, Brand shares his deeply personal journey to recovery while investigating how society treats those struggling with substance abuse.
Through meetings with recovering addicts, scientists researching the psychology of addiction, policymakers, and others affected by drug use, Brand challenges conventional ideas about addiction and addicts. He explores the underlying causes of substance abuse, including trauma, mental health issues, and wider social factors, drawing parallels between his own experiences and those of others. The documentary also references the tragic death of singer Amy Winehouse, which acts as a catalyst for Brand’s inquiry into addiction and recovery.
Alongside personal stories and expert interviews, the film features Brand’s appearance before the UK Home Affairs Select Committee, where he advocates for more compassionate, evidence-based drug policies and improved approaches to addiction treatment.
