The Social Dilemma
The Social Dilemma, directed by Jeff Orlowski, explores the negative consequences of the social media phenomenon among teens and young adults. The film interviews former employees of major technology companies such as Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Mozilla, drawing on their opinions about how these companies exert strong influence over today’s social, cultural, and political realms — and not for the better.
The Social Dilemma delves into the ability of social media to spread rumours, false information, social and political manipulation, and bullying content like wildfire. It also explains how devastating this effect has been on young people, who have become addicted to the opinions and views of others on these platforms, to the detriment of their mental health.
This documentary ultimately exposes the rise in teen depression and suicide rates and their connection to the dangers of addiction to the many social platforms now available.
