Where Dreams Go To Die

Where Dreams Go To Die chronicles the extraordinary journey of ultrarunner Gary Robbins as he takes on the infamous Barkley Marathons. This grueling race, held annually in Tennessee’s Frozen Head State Park, is widely considered one of the most challenging endurance events in the world. The film follows Robbins through two attempts at completing the race, offering viewers an intimate look at the physical and mental toll exacted by this brutal competition.

The Barkley Marathons is no ordinary race. Participants must complete five loops of a course that spans roughly 20 to 30 miles per loop, with a total elevation gain of over 60,000 feet. The catch? Runners have only 60 hours to finish all five loops, and they must navigate the unmarked course while collecting pages from books hidden throughout the wilderness. Since its inception, only 15 people have ever completed the full race.

The documentary captures Robbins’ intense preparation for the event, showcasing his rigorous training regimen and the sacrifices he makes in pursuit of his goal. Viewers witness the emotional rollercoaster of his first attempt in 2016, where he comes tantalizingly close to finishing but ultimately falls short in the final loop due to extreme sleep deprivation and navigational errors.

Undeterred by his initial failure, Robbins returns in 2017 for another shot at conquering the Barkley. The film provides a raw and unfiltered look at the physical and psychological challenges he faces during his second attempt. From battling harsh weather conditions to grappling with the ever-present threat of disorientation and exhaustion, Robbins’ determination is put to the ultimate test.

Throughout the documentary, interviews with Robbins, his support crew, and other Barkley veterans offer insights into the unique culture surrounding this enigmatic race. The film also sheds light on the eccentric race director, Lazarus Lake, and the philosophy behind creating such a punishing event.

Where Dreams Go To Die is not just a story about one man’s quest to finish an impossibly difficult race. It’s a meditation on the limits of human endurance, the power of perseverance, and the profound impact that pursuing seemingly impossible goals can have on an individual’s life. The documentary serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the lengths to which some will go to test their own boundaries.
