Murderball
Murderball follows the intense world of wheelchair rugby, a full-contact sport played by quadriplegic athletes. It focuses on the rivalry between the United States and Canadian national teams as they prepare for and compete in the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.
At the center of the narrative are several key figures, including Mark Zupan, a tattooed and fiercely competitive player for the U.S. team, and Joe Soares, a former American player who becomes the coach of the Canadian team after being cut from the U.S. squad. Their personal conflict adds an extra layer of tension to the already heated competition between the two nations.
The documentary goes beyond the sport itself, offering intimate glimpses into the daily lives of the athletes. It addresses topics such as how they navigate relationships, sexuality, and the challenges of living with quadriplegia. The film also follows Keith Cavill, a recently injured motocross racer, as he adapts to his new reality and discovers the world of wheelchair rugby.
Throughout the film, the athletes’ stories unfold, revealing their struggles, triumphs, and the indomitable spirit that drives them to compete at the highest level. It showcases the physicality and intensity of wheelchair rugby, dispelling common misconceptions about the capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
