Super High Me
Super High Me follows comedian Doug Benson as he conducts a unique experiment inspired by Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me. Instead of fast food, Benson focuses on marijuana consumption. It chronicles Benson’s journey as he abstains from cannabis for 30 days, followed by another 30 days of constant marijuana use.
Throughout the experiment, Benson undergoes various tests to measure the effects of marijuana on his body and mind. These include lung capacity tests, physical examinations, and even taking the SATs. The results of these tests during his abstinence period are compared to those during his heavy usage phase, providing insights into the drug’s impact.
The film also touches on broader issues surrounding marijuana use, particularly the debate over medical cannabis. It features interviews with marijuana activists, dispensary owners, politicians, and patients involved in the medical cannabis movement. This aspect of the documentary sheds light on the complex legal and social landscape of marijuana use in the United States, especially in California where much of the film takes place.
Interspersed with the experiment and interviews are segments of Benson’s stand-up comedy performances, both during his abstinence and heavy usage periods. These segments offer a glimpse into how marijuana affects his comedic timing and content.
